On April 27-28, 2023, the International Scientific Conference «Desheriev Readings – 2023» was held in Grozny, the Chechen Republic, dedicated to the 105th anniversary of Professor Yunus Desherievich Desheriev, organized by the Kadyrov Chechen State University and the Institute of the Chechen Language jointly with the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was attended by laboratory staff: G.N.S., D.F.N. Aisa Nikolaevna Bitkeeva, S.N.S., Ph.D. Irena Semenovna Khokholova and M.N.S. Igor Albertovich Danilov and Rosa Aleksandrovna Danilova, implementing the scientific project «Urbanization, linguistic diversity and/or language competition in the Arctic and Subarctic Zone of the Russian Federation: New Challenges and Development Prospects» (A.N. Bitkeeva, No. 23-28-01318), supported by the Russian Science Foundation. At the international round table «Sociolinguistic problems of Russia: Past and Present» held within the framework of the conference, researchers presented reports that substantiate theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of languages functioning in the urban space of the North and the Arctic. So, the joint report of Bitkeeva A.N., Khokholova I.S., Filippova V.V. «Urbanization of the northern Arctic city: new directions and research methods» presents the concept of the planned research, the methods of studying the problem under consideration developed by the team are put up for discussion. Khokholova I.S. and Danilova R.A. in the report «Linguistic biography of the cities of Southern Yakutia (based on the material of field research in 2022)» presented the results of a sociolinguistic survey of the districts of Southern Yakutia, organized by the laboratory in September 2022. Danilov I.A. in his report «Language orientations and attitudes of students studying in the northern industrial monotown (on the example of G. Mirny of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)» announced the interim results of studying the problems of ethno-linguistic identity and orientations of young people studying in educational institutions of secondary and higher education located in the northern mono-profile city. In addition, the scientists took part in the traditional Third School Seminar «Modern Sociolinguistics: concepts, methods, tasks». The theme of the school of young sociolinguists this year was new concepts, directions and methods of sociolinguistic research. Lectures were delivered by foreign and domestic researchers in the field of interaction between language and society. Recall that the first two international school seminars were organized by our laboratory «Linguistic Ecology of the Arctic» in 2021 and 2022 on the basis of the Northeastern Federal University named after M.K. Ammosov.
