The factors influencing language shift include migration, urbanization, and industrial development of the northern territories. Indigenous peoples who retain ties to a traditional way of life demonstrate a higher level of language preservation, both in terms of its transmission across generations, and in terms of preserving various language domains.

Within the framework of the project “Preservation of Linguistic and Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development of the Arctic and Subarctic of the Russian Federation”, an international research laboratory, the Arctic Linguistic Ecology Lab, was established at the Northeastern Federal University named after M.K. Ammosov in 2021. The scientific supervisor of the laboratory is Lenore Grenoble, a professor at the University of Chicago (USA).

Researchers from M.K. Ammosov NEFU work in the laboratory together with scientists from the University of Chicago (USA), the European University at St. Petersburg, the Institute for Linguistic Research of the RAS in St. Petersburg, the Institute of History named after Sh. Marjani of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Institute for Humanitarian Research and North Indigenous Peoples Problems of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, Chukotka branch NEFU.

Creation of an international scientific collaboration in the field of linguistic ecology research, the socio-cultural landscape of the Arctic and Subarctic of Russia (on the example of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug); 2. Involvement of young researchers in the scientific study of modern language processes as a complex problem of the territory’s sustainable development.

The Arctic Linguistic Ecology Lab will lay the foundations for a scientific school of linguistic ecology – a comprehensive study of languages, cultures, and the social environment of their existence as one of the important indicators of sustainable development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and adjacent (subarctic) territories, as well as the basis for the well-being of individual ethnic groups and Russian society as a whole.
